T THEME

Over the last few years, media organisations and journalists have to cope with major events in the form of crisis.

What is the role of ethics and standards?

The news is more often dominated by crises: sudden outbreaks of diseases, unexpected political and military crises, extreme weather crises, food crises, energy crises, environmental crises, financial crises. Journalists and news organizations have a unique and important role to play when covering national or international crises. What is the role of professional journalism in this? How well they cover crises (for instance during the financial crisis in Greece)? What can we learn from that? And most of all: what does it mean for our teaching and HOW (best practices, examples) can we prepare our students for this?

The aim of the conference is to discuss how journalists and media should report risk and crisis. More specifically, we aim to bring forward challenges, opportunities and responses needed in a changing media ecosystem. The shift towards this new environment means that crisis journalism should be on focus. The core objective of the conference is to facilitate the exchange of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching resources and ideas.

Key questions that will be addressed in the conference

What are the core skills and knowledge that are required today? How can the theory and the practice of journalism be combined to complement the profile of contemporary multi-skilled journalists? What is the role of technology in this contest? How should educational standards be revised taking into account the rapidly changing media environment?
